Automatic Identification System (AIS) in Panama Canal

The Panama Canal has implemented regulations to track vessels approaching and travelling in the Canal.

All ships over 300 tons or more than 20 m in lenght must be equipped with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) that complies with IMO.

This regulation is effective from 1 July 2003 well before the IMO date for vessels to carry AIS.

For vessels not fitted with AIS, the Panama Canal Authority will supply a portable AIS for a fee of US$150.
