Libya: Oil Cargoes from Ras Lanuf (*UPDATE*)

Friday 15 August 2014

Tripoli, 13 August 2014, Reuters reported that an oil tanker has loaded a cargo of 670,000 barrels of Libyan crude from the Ras Lanuf Oil Terminal. This is the first cargo to be loaded in over a year since the port was reopened following blockades by armed protesters.

North's Libyan correspondent, Gargoum Legal Marine, have kindly provided an update on the status of Libyan oil terminals:

QUOTE:
Two Libyan oil terminals have reopened. The terminals of Zueitina located to the south of Benghazi and Hariga to the west are now in government hands. Two other ports Ras Lanuf and Sidra are due to reopen in the coming weeks

There have been a number of articles in the trade and international press covering the recent incident where the Libyan Navy fired warning shots at a Maltese flagged oil tanker when attempting to enter the rebel controlled port of Es Sider in Libya. Although the circumstances surrounding this incident are not fully known, it is understood that crude oil cargo is being sold at this port by militia forces, who are seeking autonomy for its region, Cyrenaica.
The Libyan Prime Minister has warned that government forces would "destroy or sink" any tanker coming to load oil illegally. The National Oil Corporation (NOC) confirmed any tanker approaching occupied ports without a permit from them would be dealt with by the Libyan Navy.

North has received advice on the current status of government and rebel controlled ports from our local correspondent in Benghazi, Gargoum Legal Marine.

The correspondent has advised that the following ports are under the control of rebels and are considered by the Libyan Government to be held illegally:

• Ras Lanuf
• Es Sider
• Zueitina
• Marsa al Hariga

Members should exercise caution if fixing oil cargoes from Libya.
