Construction of security wall along the Suez Canal

Members will recall that the Association had reason to publish a number of updates on Egypt last year, specifically with respect to security concerns ashore and along the canal.

Vessels traversing the canal may have noticed that construction work has been under way, specifically at the southern entrance, for the building of a wall and fence. This work is designed to further the security along the canal which remains under the protection of the Egyptian Armed Forces.

The latest information is that this work is now at least 45% completed, and the full length of this security fence will be 65 km long.

Ultimately there will be fence and wall constructs at both the southern entrance, and the north around Ismalila and Port Said.

Given that the political and social situation in Egypt remains unsettled, Members would be well advised to continue to exercise caution when calling at Egyptian ports and proceeding through the canal.

Should any Member's vessel have any concern or difficulty, the Master should not hesitate to contact the Association's correspondents for assistance.
