Labour Dispute Update

Following Bulletin 942, we have been advised that the vessel in the middle of disputes, causing severe congestion at the port of Nouakchott has been moved from the berth.

The vessel in question had been blocking multiple berths, causing congestion of up to 27 vessels whilst the labour dispute was ongoing. Now that the berths are free, port operations can start to resume.

The labour dispute is still ongoing.

14 January 2014 - Bulletin 942

Club correspondents in Mauritania have informed us that there is an ongoing labour dispute in the port of Nouakchott, Mauritania.

The dispute is between the port labourers and a large sugar importer and involves arguments regarding whether containers offloaded in Nouakchott should be unstuffed in or out of the port.

As such, labourers are refusing to work on a vessel carrying a cargo owned by the sugar importer.

As a result, there is heavy congestion in the port and is leading to long delays for vessels and the situation is at a standstill.
