Personal safety issues in respect of port calls and shore leave

The Association has previously cautioned about personal safety issues in respect of port calls and shore leave when in Venezuela.

The Association has now been advised by its Correspondent that there have been some social disturbances and protests in Venezuela which have been quite serious.

This has apparently had an impact on some port operations as shore side transport and trucks, as well as shore personnel, have had difficulty reaching ports on some occasions. This has included difficulty in arranging for surveyor attendances, especially at short notice.

Members would be advised to take note, and to carefully monitor developments. A review should be made as to whether shore leave beyond port limits is prudent in these circumstances, and in any event crew should avoid going to any area where protests may be underway.

In case of concern or emergency, the ship's Master should not hesitate to contact the Association's Correspondents for assistance.

If Members have further queries, they are asked to contact the Association: lossprevention@skuld.com
