Thailand, Martial Law and Port Labour Union Strikes

On the morning of 20 May the Chief of the Royal Thai Army declared martial law across the whole of Thailand. There is increased military presence in Bangkok and neighbouring provinces.

Further to the announcement of Martial law, the Thai Army announced they were taking control of Thailand’s administration from 16:00Hrs today and declared a curfew from 22:00 to 05:00Hrs.

Labour Unions representing workers in Thai state firms have called for a strike this week to force the government out. The unions are siding with street protesters who have been trying for six months to get a new prime minister appointed.

The State Enterprises Workers’ Relations Confederation, whose members come from around 20 state firms, said its members would strike from Thursday in sympathy with the protesters.

Local Correspondents Spica Services Limited have advised that they are unsure whether Labour Union within the port authority will follow this request, but believe that this action would not effect labour in private ports.

The situation is evolving rapidly and Members should monitor local news and contact the Club’s local Correspondent for further information.
