Plea for Operation Atlanta to stay despite fall in piracy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Although the situation in East Africa remains “very fragile”, there are fears that cash-strapped EU countries may call for withdrawal of naval force.<\/p>\n

European shipowners are calling for the EU Operation Atalanta to be maintained off the east coast of Africa amid fears that a reduction in piracy will tempt cash strapped governments to pull the plug.<\/p>\n

European Community Shipowners’ Association (ECSA) secretary-general Patrick Verhoeven says Atalanta has “strongly contributed to the decline of successful piracy attacks” along with other self-protection measures by shipowners.<\/p>\n
