Despite a declaration of the end of piracy’ in HRA by some observers, MarOps has monitored and assisted on 133 piracy incidents throughout 2012. This evidence strongly suggests that although vessel counter-measures have been successful, the threat remains.<\/p>\n

It is clear that Armed Guards (AG) have been extremely effective. Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSCs) coupled with Citadels and sensible BMP4 safeguards are the first lines of defence against piracy (see reduction factors for full assessment).<\/p>\n

Ransom rates and crew captivity duration have increased significantly during 2012; the economics of the supply and demand factors will mean any high-profile vessels taken now will be subject to a huge financial demand. As ransom payments are handled very discretely it is difficult to calculate an accurate average making some estimations misleading. The highest reported payment figure this year is $11.1M; although payments will vary considerably due to a multitude of factors, this appears to be more realistic for a high profile and high value merchant vessel.<\/p>\n
