There are 211 attacks and 24 hijackings worldwide reported to International Maritime Bureau up to 23 May 2011. The release of &#8220;Irene SL&#8221; leads to the highest ransom in history which amounted to US$ 13 million this April. Under such circumstances, we highly recommend shipowners whose vessels will transit piracy prone areas, e.g. Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden etc., to place Kidnap &amp; Ransom (K&amp;R) insurance to protect their interest.
