LIFEBOATS from the box ship Albedo have been spotted on a Somali beach about 14 miles north of where the pirated ship sank, EU NAVFOR said.

An EU Naval Force crew spotted the two orange lifeboats during an aerial search, but “no members of the Albedo crew or pirates were sighted in or near the lifeboats” .

An EU NAVFOR warship and aircraft have been searching for survivors of the 1,066teu (15,566dwt) Albedo, which sank in rough seas while anchored 2.2 miles off the Grisby pirate redoubt in northeastern Somalia on 7 July.

EU NAVFOR said at least 15 mariners held captive on the ship were feared dead.

“The whereabouts of the 15 crew members from MV Albedo is still to be confirmed,” EU NAVFOR said.

Albedo and its 23 crew were hijacked 900nm off Somalia on 26 November 2010, while it was on its way to Kenya.

Seven of the hostages were freed on 2 August 2012 after a ransom of $1.1M was paid, but one hostage was shot during those dealings.

Sea-web indicated that Albedo was owned and operated by Malaysias Majestic Enrich Shipping, which was incorporated on 25 January 2008 as a private limited company under the name of Majestic Enrich Sdn Bhd in Malaysia.
