Serious unrest
A large number (numbers vary greatly according between sources) of people were killed or injured during the attempt by Egyptian security forces on 14 August to disperse pro-Morsi supporters (Muslim Brotherhood and others). The unrest continues in several cities.
Pro-Morsi supporters have attacked several public buildings and security personnell during large scale demonstrations around the country. New demonstrations may occur today 15 August. Tomorrow Friday 16 August one should expect further unrest after the Friday prayers.
Westerners, Christians, and women have been the target of various attacks by extremist groups over the past month.
Curfew
As of 14 August, a curfew was imposed between 7 pm and 6 am in morning, in and around Cairo and several other cities and regions. Travelling during the curfew is not allowed. According to the Norwegian Embassy (15 August) the curfew is still in place. The following areas are affected: Cairo, Alexandria, Suez, Ismailiya, Fayoum, Benisuef, Minya, Assiut, Beheira, North and South Sinai. The situation may change on short notice. Make sure to follow the news, and current, local and updated security advice from trusted partners.
State of emergency
A nation wide state of emergency has been declared, for a month, setting certain laws and rights aside, and imposing certain demands on visitors. The exact implications for remains unclear, and in our experience the time frame may change.
Suez Canal
The Suez Canal remains open and with normal traffic volumes. All ports were open and in service as per early morning 15 August, according to available information.
Egypt’s 2nd and 3rd Army, and other forces, protect and patrol (waterways, land, air) the Canal and its surrounding areas. The security presence is solid and visible.
Services in port cities along the Canal, as well as government, banking etc functions, may be affected by the situation. We hear about disruptions to transport etc in Port Said, that have affected crew change schedules.
Port cities, crew change, travel security
It is advisable to avoid crew change or consider very carefully whether it is safe to change crew in Egyptian ports at this time.
The situation in Egypt is fluid and unpredictable. Visits to larger population centres, and road travelling, may be dangerous.
If still considering road travel make sure you have the latest and most reliable information on the situation in the road axis of choice. Take the necessary security precautions! The situation may change on short notice. The general security situation in Egypt will remain fluid for the medium term.
Current situation:
Some ships agents have discontinued crew change services at this time, all over Egypt. Others still offer crew change services. Make sure to only offer services that include solid security advice and arrangements.
We understand that in some places (incl Port Said) there may be some security escorts available (on various terms) on the road to Cairo etc. Check with your local agent for such services out of other port cities, if you have personnell in Egypt that must be moved.
Stay away from large gatherings and population centres while travelling.
Do NOT travel outside daylight. Be prepared for disruptions that may slow you down when travelling overland. Respect the curfew times.
Agree to stay in touch with your crew during road transport, at regular and brief intervals.

Cairo Airport
The airport is open, accessible by road and in business as per the morning of 15 August. Use flight tracking apps or websites to check services. Because of the curfew it may be advisable to allow for one extra hotel night on your way to or from the airport.
