It’s a common practice for vessels sailing up the East Coast of Africa, into the Gulf of Aden or via the Suez Canal to call at South African ports to take on / disembark security personnel with weapons and vice versa. There are strict regulations imposed by the South African authorities against weapons on board vessels which including fines, imprisonment of personnel. In light of that, operators and ship-owners with vessels calling at or off South African port must make sure that they follow all the necessary procedures in order to avoid any unnecessary prosecution by the authorities. Strict compliance with the South African Customs & Excise Act’s terms and permissions form the South African Police Services are needed if weapons are to be loaded on or remove from a vessel. The Port Safety Officer of the relevant ports must be notified. Following the requirements on the list regarding the reporting, storage in a lock-up safe and inspections of weapons by the authorities is needed for vessels visiting the ports when reaches the port.
