Piracy activities have hit record high since 2011 with increased piracy attacks, higher ransom demands and expansion of the geographical scope of attacks. There are 211 attacks and 24 hijackings worldwide reported to International Maritime Bureau up to 23 May 2011. The release of “Irene SL” leads to the highest ransom in history which amounted to US$13 million this April. Under such circumstances, we highly recommend shipowners whose vessels will transit piracy prone areas, e.g. Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden etc., to place Kidnap & Ransom (K&R) insurance to protect their interest.
