The latest edition of The London P&I Club’s Stop Loss 60 includes:
Bagged rice cargos
The Club has seen an increase in Members entering into the bagged rice trade to West Africa. Cargo claims are endemic to this trade and we discuss the reasons for this and what steps can be taken to mitigate the risk.
Mill scale
The Club has also observed an increase in the carriage of mill scale, once a waste product, but now a cargo in its own right, which should be treated as a Class A cargo, prone to liquefaction.
Diving accidents
The recurrence of diving accidents and fatalities demonstrates that Members need to exercise extreme caution when diving operations are being performed in the vicinity of ships.
Ship Inspection Programme
The Club is concerned about a rise in the number of problems related to Entry into Enclosed Space procedures that have been identified during recent ship inspections.
Passage planning
An increase in the frequency of claims arising from contact between fish farms around China and ships navigating outside recommended routes highlight the need for extra caution when planning passages to this area.
Iron ore fines
The shipment of iron ore fines from Guatemala is a relatively recent development and Members are reminded to exercise caution in view of the absence of local experience and infrastructure to support assessing if the cargo is safe for shipment.
