  • Pirates hijack tanker MV Cotton

GEDEN Lines confirmed to Fairplay today that one of its tankers has been hijacked by pirates off the central Africa’s Gabon.

Malta-flagged MV Cotton (23,248gt) was in Port Gentil’s anchorage when it was taken on 14 July.

A Geden representative said the company has had “no contact with the vessel as yet, which is usual at this stage”.

So it has received “no demands from the attackers. We are assuming that this is a cargo theft until we have any other information. All 24 crew are Indians.”

According to IHS Fairplay data, the vessel was partly laden with fuel and set out from the French port of Donges in June.

Another vessel owned by Turkey-based Geden Lines had to be rescued by a NATO warship in June 2012 after it was attacked by pirates off Oman.
