Although the situation in East Africa remains “very fragile”, there are fears that cash-strapped EU countries may call for withdrawal of naval force.
European shipowners are calling for the EU Operation Atalanta to be maintained off the east coast of Africa amid fears that a reduction in piracy will tempt cash strapped governments to pull the plug.
European Community Shipowners’ Association (ECSA) secretary-general Patrick Verhoeven says Atalanta has “strongly contributed to the decline of successful piracy attacks” along with other self-protection measures by shipowners.
