Port of Surigao, Mindanao, Philippines and the nickel ore mines in the surrounding area, attacks by New Peoples Army (NPA)

  pdf ENG

The two affected mines have made statements that they hope to be back in operation within a few weeks, loading of vessels has continued at other mines in the area at their designated anchorages. The situation however is far from over, the NPA released yesterday, Thursday 6th October, a statement that the attack on the three mines in Surigao del Norte would serve as a warning to other companies violating rebel policies.

The NPA has named further mines, however these are located in Southern region of Mindanao and involve the $5.9 billion Tampakan project in South Cotabato province, considered Southeast Asia’s largest undeveloped copper-gold prospect.

It is clear that the current issue is far from resolved and the area unstable, we therefore continue to strongly recommend that all owners/charterers of vessels intending to load nickel ore in the Philippines contact their respective P&I Club to clarify the situation. Please see below a simple map showing the more prominent mines and their location in the Surigao area.
