It is believed that many shipowners have been notified about the MLC 2006 which enters into force on 20 Aug 2013. Many shipowners query whether their existing P&I cover fulfills the Financial Security Requirement of the MLC 2006. We try to summarize the latest update on this issue in this circular.
The MLC 2006 applied to all the registered commercial vessels, regardless of the flag state they belongs to. For vessels over 500 GRT (Gross Tonnage) must carry the MLC Certificate and usually the certificate would be valid maximum for 5 years. In the coming enforcement of the MLC 2006, there are 3 main requirements of Financial Security.
