The ‘fire triangle’ of heat, oxygen and fuel has long helped seafarers understand the contributing factors to the hazard of combustion. The following are some main contributing factors to the hazard of enclosed spaces.
Fire Hazard
Nowadays, In fact on some ships such as large container vessels, it could be argued that, with the range of dangerous cargoes carried and the potential for misdeclaration of cargo, the risk of fire has increased. However changes in legislation have resulted in changes to training, equipment and ship design which have reduced and, crucially, raised awareness of the risk. The awareness of fire risk is brought about by frequent exercises, use of equipment and the training required during a career at sea.
