Japanese port authorities require confirmation of P&I cover

The Maritime Bureau of Japan has enacted regulations which require all vessels of 100 GT or larger to have P&I insurance covering the following risks:

  - oil pollution
  - wreck removal

This requirement is effective from 1st March 2005.

Only approved P&I insurers will be acceptable which is defined as all international Group P&I Clubs and some other insurers, the latter which is not known yet. We are trying to obtain this information from authorities.

The vessel must carry the P&I entry certificate on board and report the details of insurance to the relevant authority prior to port entry.

PSC inspection will include examination of the P&I entry certificate.

Failure to comply with the regulations will result in fines.
