Civil Liability Insurance Requirement for Non-Uruguayan Vessels

Port authorities in Uruguay have issued a bylaw under which all vessels remaining at the Port of Montevideo without engaging in commercial activity for periods over ten days and up to a maximum of 180 days must submit to the port authorities evidence of civil liability insurance.

For foreign-flag vessels, the bylaw requires evidence of civil liability insurance up to $200,000, which must be submitted to the port authorities by the port agent.

It is compulsory for this insurance to be placed with a Uruguayan insurance company, and the port authorities must be named as the co-assured in the policy. Carriers planning for non-Uruguayan vessels to remain for long periods at Montevideo should check with their local agent or Club correspondent prior to the vessel's call in order to avoid the possibility of delays and/or fines levied by the port authorities.
