Genetically modified cargoes

In February 2004, China's Department of Agriculture officially allowed foreign genetically modified (GM) cargoes into China. Earlier, imports mainly soyabeans and maize were only allowed under interim agreements.

Importers are now required to apply for safety certification and five biotechnology firms including Monsanto, Bayer, Syngenta have since submitted 18 applications. China has set an April 20 deadline for developers of GM crops to attain safety certificates, and cargoes which are not approved will not be allowed entry into China.

Although the consequential loss arising from a cargo which is not permitted entry into a country is the responsibility of the shippers and charterers, shipowners should still be aware of the potential problems and regulations which each country implements on imports and seek as much information as possible. In some situations the shipowner is left to resolve a charterer's problems due to the inability and financial resources of the charterers.
